Meta's latest update to its popular WhatsApp instant messaging service - which aims to keep the app 'fresh, simple and approachable' - seems to have backfired, with users complaining that it is 'hurting people's eyes'.

The update, which has been rolled out across both Apple and Android devices this month, hopes to help navigation by including a bottom bar. But the colour scheme has upset a number of users, who have refrained from holding back their opinions online.

Taking to X, one person vented: "What WhatsApp changed things to green? Doesn't take much to annoy me – I'm not one for change," while a second ranted: "I screamed when it updated itself overnight."

The Mirror reports that a third, said: "iOS WhatsApp turned green, not that I hate it but, it's kinda hurting my eye," while a fourth, complained: "Mine turned green last month. I was seriously ******. Didn't even go on WhatsApp till the next day. The colour was seriously blinding at first."

On the opposition, a number of others have grown to rate the new colour palette, with one arguing: "WhatsApp's new look? It's like giving a classic car a modern facelift - same charm, just with a sleeker design and a touch of contemporary flair," while a second confessed: "I love the WhatsApp new update!"

Addressing changes, Head of WhatsApp Design at Meta - Idit Yaniv - explained that a 'new, consistent green palette' had been introduced to the app for an 'unfiltered experience', adding: "We considered over 35 different colour iterations, ultimately aligning with WhatsApp's iconic green and opting for a palette that allows for harmonious colour pairings throughout the app.

"We also increased the usage of neutral colours, enabling us to be more selective about where and how the green is used."

Other changes include a 'darker dark mode', as well as focusing on 'higher contract and deeper tones to reduce eye strain in low light environments'. Meta has also updated its icon to a 'rounded, outlined style' while refreshing illustrations and adding animation 'for a more playful aesthetic'.

The default background has also changed in chats, while a 'new attachment layout' is included when sending photos and videos on iOS. Chat filters also help people to find 'important conversations faster'.
