WhatsApp will soon stop working on millions of older phones, company warns

Millions of phone users with older iPhones and Android handsets could be cut off from friends – after WhatsApp announced it will cut support for older handsets.

People still using older versions of iPhone and Android will be cut off from the first of February 2020, the company announced.

The new ‘purge’ – announced in an update to a company blog – will affect Android versions up to 2.3.7, Nokia Series 40 handsets and iOS devices running iOS 7 or older.

WhatsApp said, ‘Because we’ll no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time.

Users with phones running these older OS versions can no longer create accounts, WhatsApp warned.

The company advises that users switch to devices running newer operating systems.

WhatsApp says, ‘There’s currently no option to transfer your chat history between platforms. However, we provide the option to send your chat history attached to an email.’
