Where to Go Ice Skating in the New Jersey Skylands

Are you looking for a place to take the family ice skating in the New Jersey Skylands Region? I have a few places that I can recommend.

Here they are:

Skylands Ice World

If your kids are fans of the New York Rangers or the New Jersey Devils, you are going to want to take them to the Skylands Ice World. It is an indoor ice rink located on State Highway 23 in Stockholm, and both teams have been known to play there. The New Jersey Devils have annual clinics there as well. The ice rink is open to the public for daily skate sessions throughout the winter. The facility also periodically hosts special indoor ice skating events geared towards families. Admission prices range from $7 to $9, and skate rentals are $3.

Wawayanda State Park

Want to skate on a 255-acre lake? Then I'd suggest that you head on over to the Wawayanda State Park on Warwick Turnpike in Hewitt. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., and admission is waived during the winter months.

Stokes State Forest

Stokes State Forest on Coursen Road in Branchville is another place worth considering. Admission is gratis and it is open daily from sunrise until sunset. There are two lakes to choose from: Stony and Ocquittunk. Stony Lake is the larger of the two lakes and encompasses 15 acres. Lake Ocquittunk is only eight acres.

Allamuchy Mountain State Park

Allamuchy Mountain State Park is located on Willow Grove Street in Hackettstown and features several wonderful ice skating areas. There is the 179-acre Cranberry Lake, the 46-acre Jefferson Lake, Deer Park Pond and Allamuchy Pond. The park opens daily from sunrise until sunset and admission is free. You will need to bring your own skates, though.

Swartswood State Park

Swartswood State Park is an excellent place to go ice skating as well. It is located off Route 619 in Swartswood and features the 75-acre Little Swartswood Lake, the 494-acre Swartswood Lake and a Duck Pond. Admission is free, and it is open daily from 8 a.m. until dusk.

High Point State Park

High Point State Park is one of my favorite areas to go ice skating. It is located on Route 23 in Sussex and is open daily from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Admission is free, and you will need to bring your skates. The park features the 20-acre Lake Marcia, the 20-acre Sawmill Lake and the 30-acre Steenykill Lake.

My family enjoys winter sports and we have been to the areas mentioned.
