Following a wet, gloomy and cold week for many of us in Kent, new forecasts have revealed when we could see the mercury climb back up to 20C mark over the coming days. September has kicked off with back to back rain showers and a dramatic drop in temperatures for the south east, with some parts of the county even facing thunderstorms in recent days.

Now, Met Office forecasters say that a drier and more settled period is on the horizon, and it will begin very soon. Tonight (September 13), temperatures will again sink down into the low single digits here in Kent, feeling as chilly as 3C according to the latest predictions for the south east.

This will then make way for a generally warmer and dry weekend, with temperature peaks sitting firmly in the high teens and low 20s throughout. Jason Kelly, a Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “The cold Arctic air we have been experiencing will be replaced with warmer westerlies over the weekend.

“High pressure will bring fine weather to the south, but there is an area of low pressure to the northwest, which will push some weather fronts across Scotland and Northern Ireland, bringing rain and thicker cloud. It will also be windy across Northern Scotland, especially on Saturday.”

This front is expected to move to the south east on Sunday, September 15, bringing the warmest spells for the region. Met Office forecasts anticipate 20C highs in Dartford, Maidstone, Medway, Canterbury and Tunbridge Wells at around 4pm on this day.

Meanwhile, across the rest of the county, peaks of between 18C and 19C are likely for most, even in coastal areas such as Thanet and Dover. This trend is expected to continue into the next week also, with more settled and dry spells on the way.

David Oliver is a Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office and explained: “In the wake of the front on Sunday, high pressure then builds, bringing fine and dry conditions to most parts of the UK for much of next week. If any rain develops it is expected to be confined to the extreme northwest of Scotland on Monday and Tuesday.

“There is a risk of some fog patches overnight and temperatures continue to increase, with many places a little above average by mid-week.” For the start of next week, the Met Office anticipates cloud and fog over the south east on Monday and Tuesday, though on both days this will soon break to leave sunshine in the afternoon.

Looking to the latter half of next week, the long range forecast for Wednesday, September 18 to Friday, September 27 adds: “Fairly strong winds could affect the south at times. There is little change expected during the following weekend and much of the week that follows, although by late September there is a chance that more unsettled conditions may begin to develop.”
