The owners of a bar that narrowly escaped licence revocation earlier this year are seeking approval for refurbishment works.

Northern Bay Leisure has submitted plans to revamp JK's Bar on Wellington Road, Whitby, which include the installation of a new shop front. North Yorkshire Police had previously sought to have JK's licence revoked due to numerous complaints, but retracted their objections after the bar changed hands.

Russell Vickers of Northern Bay Leisure, the new proprietor, has committed to keeping the establishment closed until renovations are complete. He has promised substantial investment in the venue, a completely new team, and a rebranding, although the new name is yet to be disclosed in the plans reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRs).

Proposals suggest replacing the existing timber-framed shop front with modern aluminium powder-coated frame doors and potentially adding windows at the front of the property, situated within Whitby's conservation area. The application states this had been “carefully considered” and that plans would “not have an adverse impact on the surrounding area”.

Police had previously expressed concerns about the previous management's operation of the bar, accusing the former owners of showing a "complete disregard" for both residents and regulatory bodies. The request for a licence review was withdrawn following the completion of the bar's sale.

North Yorkshire Council is yet to set a date for the decision on the application, which is currently under consideration.
