White House mocks Russia for sanctioning the wrong Joe Biden

Watch: White House mocks Russia for sanctioning Joe Biden's father

The White House mocked the imposition of Russian sanctions on Joe Biden and a host of other senior US officials.

Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, suggested the Kremlin had mistakenly sanctioned the US President's late father, after they omitted the suffix "junior" from his name.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton, a long-time foe of Vladimir Putin, reacted to being sanctioned by issuing a short Oscar-style acceptance speech on Twitter.

She wrote: "I want to thank the Russian Academy for this Lifetime Achievement Award."

The US president's full name is Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.

Ms Psaki, who was also among those sanctioned, said: "President Biden is a 'junior' so they may have sanctioned his Dad, may he rest in peace."

She added: "None of us are planning tourist trips to Russia, none of us have bank accounts that we won't be able to access, so we will forge ahead."

In all, Moscow sanctioned 13 top US officials, banning them from entering Russia, in a reciprocal response to US sanctions.

The measures were also applied to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.

In a statement the Russian foreign ministry said: "It is the consequence of the extremely Russophobic policy pursued by the current US administration."

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the US has already banned Mr Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in addition to imposing sanctions that have largely cut Russia off financially from the rest of the world.

Russia also put on its "stop list" America's top general, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and CIA Director William Burns.

Moscow also sanctioned Hunter Biden, the president's son.

And it also added Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the list.

The Russian foreign ministry said it would soon announce additional sanctions against other "Russophobic" US officials, military officers, lawmakers, businessmen and media personalities.

Moscow did not specify the exact nature of the measures, which it called "personal sanctions" and a "stop list".

It said they were based on "the principle of reciprocity".

In the symbolic move it also sanctioned US Deputy National Security Advisor Daleep Singh, US Agency for International Development chief Samantha Power, Deputy Treasury Secretary Adewale Adeyemo, and US Export-Import Bank chief Reta Jo Lewis.

It appeared the Russians would still talk to senior US officials it sanctioned.

Ms Psaki said: "I think we are confident that if we need to have direct and indirect conversations with Russia we will be able to do that."
