White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was kicked out of a restaurant because she works for President Donald Trump.

Ms Sanders was asked to leave by the co-owner of the Red Hen in Lexington, Virginia on Friday night.

She later tweeted about the incident claiming: "I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for @POTUS and I politely left,"

Stephanie Wilkinson, co-owner of the Red Hen, told the Washington Post that she believed that Ms Sanders worked for an "inhumane and unethical" administration.

She said despite not being a “huge fan of confrontation” she felt she had to say something.

“This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals.”

Ms Wilkinson asked Ms Sanders to leave the rural restaurant after deliberating with staff on what the best course of action would be.

“Tell me what you want me to do. I can ask her to leave," she said she told them. "They said yes."

Ms Wilkinson said she took Ms Sanders outside and told her “that the restaurant has certain standards that I feel it has to uphold, such as honesty, and compassion, and cooperation".

To which Ms Sanders replied: “That’s fine, I’ll go."

Speaking about Ms Wilkinson, the Press Secretary said: “Her actions say far more about her than about me".

The incident comes as the Trump administration is under increasing pressure for its “zero-tolerance” immigration policy which has seen families separated at the US border.

The policy sees any undocumented migrant crossing the boarder prosecuted and has led to more than 2,300 children becoming separated from their parents.

Mr Trump has since signed an executive order to keep families together at the border but claims that he is still committed to the “zero-tolerance” policy.
