A teen moped rider is fighting for life after he was rammed from behind by a car in a hit-and-run in London’s East End, police said.

The 19-year-old was thrown off his bike when he was struck by a dark-coloured car shortly after midnight on Friday in Cavell Street, Whitechapel.

Police and paramedics raced to the scene and found him with a head injury.

He was rushed to an east London hospital where he remains in a life threatening condition.

Police said he had been riding east along Stepney Way when the car, believed to be a Volkswagen Passat, came up behind him before hitting him at speed.

The driver of the car did not stop at the scene and is believed to have made off heading east down Stepney Way, Scotland Yard added.

Detective Sergeant Mike Stubbins, from Tower Hamlets CID, said: "A young man has been left in a critical condition and it is of paramount importance that anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information comes forward.

“We would urge anyone who may have seen this vehicle or witnessed the collision to get in contact immediately."
