We’ve had some stellar television programmes to keep us occupied this year, with BBC One’s hilarious The Other One set to be another hit.

The new comedy drama, written by Motherland creator Holly Walsh, follows two sisters both called Catherine Walcott who have no idea about the other’s existence until their dad dies suddenly – revealing he’s lived a double life.

Now, sensible and up-tight Cathy comes face-to-face with fun-loving and rowdy Cat as the pair have to decide what to do with their dad’s ashes.

Here’s who’s who in this deceptive comedy…

Ellie White plays Cathy

Cathy is the uptight, sensible and naïve sister, who works in re-insurance. With her type-A personality, Cathy thinks she has everything in her future all mapped out – until she discovers her dad’s deceptive nature after his death.

“She's not exactly street smart, in fact probably the opposite, and meeting her new sister Cat certainly opens her eyes to the world beyond her small bubble,” says White of her character. “After the death of her dad I think she finds quite cathartic.”

You may recognise White from playing Princess Beatrice in comedy The Windsor, as well as her other comic roles in Stath Lets Flats and This Time with Alan Partridge.

Lauren Socha plays Cat

Wild and fun-loving Deliveroo driver Cat is constantly looking for a laugh. While she is so different to her sister Cathy, Cat has always wanted a sibling and is desperate for the pair to bond.

“I’m incredibly similar!” Socha says of Cat, “ I do make light of an incredibly bad situation, like I can’t dwell on things. I either laugh or cry and I think that’s what she’s like.”

Socha is best-known for her role as young offender turned superhero Kelly in E4 sci-fi drama Misfits, as well as starring in the video for Arctic Monkeys’ hit music video When the Sun Goes Down. More recently, she played Anna in Sharon Horgan’s pregnancy-comedy Catastrophe.

Rebecca Front plays Tess

Cathy’s mother is both heartbroken and infuriated to find out her husband Colin had been leading an intricate double life – and decides to throw herself back into the dating scene.

“Tess is a woman who has always towed the line,” Front explains. “So when she discovers, after her husband’s untimely death, that he has defied the rules throughout their marriage - by having a whole other family and not telling her- she is understandably furious.”

Viewers may recognise veteran actor Front for her roles in satirical comedy The Thick Of It, Poldark and more recently as PR and agent Cheryl in Dark Money.

Siobhan Finneran plays Marilyn

Cat’s mother and Colin’s mistress Marilyn sees the world through heavily medicated and rose-tinted spectacles. Like her daughter, she lives life to the full, and is a healthy mix of eccentric and honest.

“Marilyn's belief in the love she shared with Colin is extraordinary considering the circumstances; she's stayed devoted to a man she saw once a week for a few hours who was married to someone else,” explains Finneran. “She's the only woman I have ever come across who has no body image issues but clearly a full range of other issues, she has just bloody well enjoyed herself regardless and appears to be guilt free, not sure how that's achievable unless living completely in denial.”

Finneran is a popular actor on screen, having starred in Benidorm, Downton Abbey and Happy Valley. Her more recent credits include Netflix’s The Stranger and ITV’s true crime drama A Confession.

Amit Shah plays Marcus

Cathy’s fiancé is not in her good books at the minute, after being caught out for sending naked photos to a co-worker.

“He’s made a silly mistake that challenges Cathy’s trust in him,” Shah explains. “And as the series develops we see him attempt to salvage his relationship as he and Cathy move closer to their wedding day.”

Shah’s most recent roles include parts in Doctor Who, His Dark Materials and most recently, Netflix’s The Witcher.

The Other One continues Fridays at 9pm on BBC One
