Borussia Dortmund face Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley on Saturday with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp watching on.

Der BVB have defied expectations to reach the elite European showpiece beating PSV, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout stages, having progressed out of Group F alongside the Parisiens ahead of AC Milan and Newcastle United.

While Klopp unites the Reds and the Yellow Wall having had spells with respective clubs, the two sides are also united with their choice of song. Anfield has become synonymous with ear-bursting atmospheres with the pre-match rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' among one of the great sights in world football.

The Reds have long sung the iconic song which was adopted in the 1960s. Liverpool icon Tommy Smith previously claimed that then-manager Bill Shankly was in awe of what he heard after being presented a copy of the single by Gerry Marsden.

The FA Cup final in 1965 is the first evidence on television that the song was sung in the terraces during Shankly's appearance on BBC's Desert Island Discs. While Liverpool will not be walking out at Wembley with half of the stadium draped in the famous red, their infamous song will chorus from one end of the home of English football.

Why do Borussia Dortmund sing You'll Never Walk Alone?

Pur Harmony singer Matthias Kartner has previously revealed why the song has been adopted over 950 kilometres away. The Dortmund band were said to have been asked to cover the song in 1996 and adhered to the request - despite initial concerns over the close ties that it had with Liverpool.

Since then, it has been a fixture of the Yellow Wall and sung regularly at Signal Iduna Park. Speaking to the official Liverpool website, Kartner said: "A good friend of ours told us 'you have to make a recording of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. I thought 'oh no!'

"It's a nice song but it was difficult to make it because of the harmony of the music. It's hard to sing because at first you go very deep and then you go high.

"But a week later we made this recording. We are Dortmund boys and big Borussia fans, so I gave the recording of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' to our stadium speaker and he took this and said 'very nice, we'll try this'.

"They [the supporters] knew it from Liverpool," Kartner continued. "But now since Pur Harmony recorded it, the people liked it from the beginning and it was fantastic for us.

"Norbert Dickel [Dortmund's stadium announcer] tried to use Gerry and the Pacemakers' version but the fans liked our song [better]. For me and many other Dortmund fans, my favourite club in England is Liverpool. The mentality is just like ours here in Dortmund."
