We are all used to seeing orange pumpkins decorating homes in the weeks leading up to Halloween. But in recent years, children have opted for various different colours as a way to subtly tell others they may have special requirements in order to enjoy the occasion to its fullest.

An American trend is now seeing children carrying blue, teal or purple pumpkins as they knock on doors. If you see a child carrying one, it means they may be neurodivergent or have allergies or health issues.

Blue pumpkins are often associated with children with autism. Teal and purple pumpkins are becoming popular with symbolising allergies, food intolerances or health issues.

If you encounter a blue-coloured basket, you're reminded to take your time and be patient with the child as speech may be difficult as well as their ability to interact with you. Zoe Goss, director of advocacy at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, said: "Trick-or-treating is a really fun part of Halloween for many kids and we don't want anyone to be left out of that.

The important thing is to think through, 'if someone has a disability of some kind, am I putting barriers between them and this experience?' Not everyone is able to say 'Trick-or-treat' to you.

"If someone comes up to you and doesn't say it, it's okay to just give them the candy," said Goss. "You don't have to make them say that phrase because some people don't speak or some people have a lot of difficulties in social situations, it may just not happen."

Children carry purple pumpkins to raise awareness for epilepsy, either for themselves or others. The trend started in 2021 by family man Ron Lamontagne who was brainstorming ways to spread awareness for epilepsy which his youngest son was diagnosed with.

Additionally, children carrying purple baskets may be holding an epi-pen or signify they or the parent are taking extra steps to ensure safety precautions are being met.

Children carrying teal variants may not be able to eat the typical chocolates offered but would appreciate non-food treats if possible.. If you see kids carrying different coloured pumpkins this Halloween, please do your best to ensure they enjoy the holiday to its fullest.
