Karen's Diner, the Grand Central restaurant known for insulting diners, has closed for good. Today, Tuesday, May 28, the brand confirmed that it has closed over the weekend after its licence was not renewed.

Customers were waiting outside the restaurant for a table at midday, including a family group of 12 who had travelled to Birmingham from Cheltenham to celebrate an 11th birthday. However, they were left disappointed after the restaurant doors remained locked.

The Birmingham branch of Karen's Diner is still listed as open on its website as well as on Google so hopeful diners were not aware of the closure until they showed up to a dark restaurant over the weekend and today. There's no signage in the window confirming the closure but the chain has confirmed to BirminghamLive that the restaurant has closed for good.

Karen's Diner first opened in Birmingham in September 2022. The theme of the restaurant was unpleasant service in which staff would insult diners by making them play games, hold signs and wear hats bearing a variety of insults.

There were strict rules in place in which Karen's staff were not supposed to insult diners in a way that could be deemed racist, homophobic, sexist or ableist. Some of the insults could be cutting, however, and occasionally staff were accused of 'taking things too far'.

Karen's garnered attention online after customers began taking members of their family to the diner without explaining the concept. Videos showing bamboozled grandparents often went viral and Karen's Diner boasts three billion TikTok views.
