It is a well known fact women have a special relationship with their hairdressers. It is like having a counsellor, the salon is a safe place to talk about almost anything while under the dryer.

Men are not as vocal when it comes to visiting the barber shop, sometimes it is a quick in-and-out job. But all that is changing and now an all female barber shop in the market town of Crewkerne are taking it upon themselves to try and encourage more and more men to come to the salon and raise awareness of men’s health.

Female staff at Krew Barbers in Crewkerne, Somerset are ‘growing’ moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other men’s health issues.

Voted best barber shop in Somerset, the award winning business is breaking through gender barriers and it is all for a good cause, there is a very serious side to it as men are not as forthcoming about symptoms and other health issues.

Rebecca (Speck) Essex-Crosby, owner of Krew Barbers in Crewkerne, and her all female team will be sporting their faux moustaches all through November.

The team of women are breaking stereotypes in support of Barbers Against Prostate Cancer (BAPC).

The worldwide charity Movember encourages men to wear moustaches during November to raise awareness of men’s health, but at Krew the women are doing it for themselves.

Speck said: "Why should men have all the fun in Movember? If wearing moustaches helps us start important conversations about men's health, we're all in."

Speck and her colleague Karolina will wear faux moustaches throughout the month to normalise and spark conversations with clients.

Speck said: “Recent experiences with clients sharing their prostate cancer journeys, along with close friends and family members facing their own health scares, made me realise why we needed to take action.

"As barbers who serve predominantly male clients, we're in a unique position to encourage these crucial health conversations."

Throughout November clients are encouraged to pop into the salon for a groom and a chat while supporting the barber shop which is in the heart of the market town of Crewkerne.

It is a friendly and welcoming place and Speck and her team hope more and more men will feel at ease talking about the issues which affect them including physical health.

Barbers Against Prostate Cancer was founded by Mark Rayment following his own prostate cancer diagnosis in September 2022.

The organization works tirelessly to educate men about risk factors, symptoms, and the critical early detection of prostate cancer.
