This is why Mineola will not hold eclipse events

MINEOLA, Texas (KETK) — Mineola officials said they will not hold any total solar eclipse events due to tornado season.

LIST: Eclipse events happening in East Texas

According to a release, the city has decided not to hold any events for the April 8 eclipse, that will occur at the peak of tornado season.

City officials said an increase of visitors could increase the strain on the already understaffed emergency services. If eclipse goers are in the area, it can make rural areas that would normally have a lower population increase by hundreds.

This can pose life safety issues if first responders are not aware of the influx of people in these locations.

To combat this issue and help first responders, the Mineola Fire Department response area has asked landowners to notify them of the location, number of people they are expecting and duration of their stay.

People can email their information to dmadsen@mineola.com or amunn@mineola.com or call 903-596-6237.
