Why The Queen was so eager to resume public appearances

Lockdown threw everyone into somewhat of a tailspin. Correct? And that includes the royal family too, who have slowly started to make their way out of their luxurious homes and resume their duties in person (as opposed to chatting over Zoom – which, in fairness, we still loved to watch).

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Sussex, recently paid Tommy's (the baby loss charity) research centre an in-person visit to learn about their work, while Prince William and his grandmother, The Queen, teamed up and dropped into the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. While there, they met scientists working on the UK's COVID-19 response and officially opened the lab's new Energetics Analysis Centre.

The trip on 16 October was Her Majesty's first public appearance since 9 March, when she joined her family, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry included, for the Commonwealth Day Service in London – and it sounds as though she's rather missed being out and about. For the duration of the pandemic, The Queen has been isolating with Prince Philip in Windsor Castle, and it's thought palace aides are now insisting she'll be resuming engagements more frequently, so long as there's a way to safely do so.

Her Majesty has a few reasons why she's keen to be back in action, too, it's believed – one being that she wants to show the nation her support during such a difficult period of time. Another, according to a new Vanity Fair report, is that the royal matriarch feels she needs to be "seen to be believed".

One royal source was quoted as saying, "The Queen has always said she needs to be seen to be believed, and she wants to be visible, particularly at a time like this to support the nation." So, err, it's not just that she's bored of rearranging the furniture in her fancy drawing room then?

It makes total sense, given that even at the impressive age of 94, Elizabeth II has never showed any signs of slowing down when it comes to work, or embracing her ever-expanding family. Quite excitingly, her granddaughter, Princess Eugenie, is expecting her first child with husband Jack Brooksbank early next year – he or she will become Her Royal Highness's ninth great-grandchild.

We'll be keeping our eyes well and truly peeled for more outings from The Queen going forward then.
