Note: This article contains spoilers for the Suits season eight finale. Any objections? Good.

Eight years after it first opened, legal drama Suits finally closed an important case yesterday (February 27), but the verdict was anything but predictable.

While it would have been enough for Robert Zane to end the episode by sacrificing his career to save Harvey Specter from being disbarred, that wasn't the bombshell Suits' season finale ended on.

Instead, after countless seasons of will they, won't they shenanigans, Harvey and Donna Paulsen finally got their break, with the episode ending with their passionate – and long-overdue – embrace.

A crowd-pleasing moment, sure, but it wasn't always going to end that way, as creator Aaron Korsh revealed how the last-minute script change came about.

Chatting to Deadline, Korsh explained that the original ending lacked "the big Harvey-Donna scene" that naturally followed Donna discussing her feelings for Harvey.

"Something was said that led me to just say, 'What if Harvey goes to Donna in the end and they finally break through?'," Korsh explained.

"Both [writers and producers] Genevieve and Ethan loved it. So did I. It's not easy to get all three of us to agree on something, so we went ahead and did it.

"It wasn’t that our minds were changed, it was that it had not been contemplated, then it was there and we loved it."

So, how different was the original ending? Not very, actually. "[It was pretty much the same," Korsh said, "[with] Zane falling on his sword for Harvey. It just didn’t have Harvey going to Donna. It was less a change than a huge addition."

We tell you what would have been a huge addition to the season finale – Meghan Markle. Hey, we can but dream.

Suits airs on USA in the US and on Netflix in the UK, and will return for a ninth and final season.
