A powerful low range is perfect fuel for workouts, and the Under Armour True Wireless Flash X buds deliver bass aplenty. Thankfully, the thunderous bass didn’t affect the rest of the earbuds’ frequency range. As expected from a JBL product, the midrange and the treble were also delivered competently, making the Flash X ideal for any type of content — not just your favorite gym or morning run playlist.
“Under Pressure” by Queen — a favorite song in my playlist for exercising — rightfully sounded energizing on the Under Armour True Wireless Flash X. The iconic bass line, the captivating piano chords, and the timeless voices of Freddie Mercury and David Bowie were thrilling and full of verve as always.
Thanks to a duo of built-in microphones, the earbuds performed reliably during telephone, FaceTime, and Zoom calls. I like that there’s an option to use them independently for such tasks if you wish.
Equipped with Bluetooth 5.0, the Flash X also maintained a flawless connection with an iPhone 11 Pro and a OnePlus 8 Pro while I tested them. It’s a welcome improvement over the Bluetooth 4.2 used in their predecessor.
COMFORT: 8/10
I wasn’t surprised to discover that the buds have a comfy fit and didn’t cause even a hint of discomfort while I tested them. They stayed in place during my daily at-home workouts, which included jumping jacks, burpees, and pushups. Their retail package includes several sets of ear tips and flexible ear fins for adjusting their fit.
Each bud has a convenient side button with nice tactility. The right one controls audio playback and the calling experience, while the left button activates JBL’s signature Ambient Aware and TalkThru modes. The former is great for outdoor exercising, while the latter will come in handy for quick conversations. Sadly, you can’t control the playback’s volume via the earbuds.
DESIGN: 8/10
Available in black, the Flash X earbuds have a design that’s understated and utilitarian in equal measure. Their textured finish, in addition to looking cool, makes them incredibly easy to adjust quickly between reps. Each bud has an Under Armour logo — JBL branding is also present, but not as visible.
The earbuds have an IPX7 rating for water resistance, which means that they can survive complete submersion under up to 1 meter of water for up 30 minutes. They are easily among the most durable offerings available today, capable of surviving sweaty workouts, outdoor runs in rainy days, as well as exposure to running water.
Crafted from aluminum, the earbuds’ charging case is the most elegant I have encountered to date. Adorned with an Under Armour logo, the sleek accessory has a sliding tray for the buds.
BATTERY PERFORMANCE: 10/10
The Under Armour True Wireless Flash X earbuds can deliver up to a rather excellent 10 hours of wireless playback between charges. Their awesome carrying case holds 4 additional full charges, for a total of 50 hours’ worth of freedom from cables. Thankfully, the accessory is equipped with a USB-C connector for charging.
I enjoyed not having to worry about recharging the earbuds or their case for almost 2 weeks while I tested them. When it comes to battery endurance and sheer charging capacity, the Flash X buds are in a league of their own.
OVERALL: 9/10
The Under Armour True Wireless Flash X earbuds by JBL are handily among the best for exercising. They effortlessly combine cool and durable design, superb ergonomics, and great sound — as well as exceptional battery performance and charging capacity.
With a $170 price tag that includes a free, year-long MapMyRun premium subscription (worth $30), the buds offer considerably more value than their similarly priced rivals. They should be on your short list of options for your next upgrade.
