Why wait goes on for new Costa in Flintshire
The 19th Costa coffee shop in North Wales is due to open months later than billed. The chain took on a premise in Flint in June with plans to open it in the autumn but a date has yet to be set.
A unit at Flintshire Retail Park, off Holywell Road, was transformed into a new coffee shop with the promise of 10 new jobs. The unit was previously home to B&M until the bargain chain moved to the former Carpet Right store close by.
In August, Flintshire Council approved plans for signs to advertise the business. Officers said the proposed fascia and projecting signs would “not be materially worse than the previous signage” and would be in keeping with the character of the retail park.

However coffee fans in Flint have been growing impatient as the wait goes on. Costa is still unable to give an opening date other than to say it will be announced “soon”.
Meanwhile there have been grumbles about the state of the pavement dug up and screened in front of the unit. “No work being done, just causing inconvenience to pedestrians,” sighed one resident on social media.
A new employee at the shop fears Costa customers may have to wait until after Christmas before the doors finally open. “They’re having troubles with the filtering/pipes for the coffee machines,” she claimed.

Due to open in early 2025, behind the Costa store, is Banana Ben’s, a children’s play centre. This will be the second branch of a business that launched in Wrexham’s Central Retail Park in 2019. It will have its own cafe.
A Costa Coffee spokesperson said: “We’re excited to open our store in Flint and are looking forward to being a part of the local community. We will be sharing more details of the new store, its features and opening date soon.” Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox
