Widespread Flooding in Spanish City of Orihuela as River Bursts Its Banks

A massive deluge of rain on Thursday, September 12, left swathes of the Spanish city of Orihuela under water, with around 300 troops deployed to help clean-up efforts.

More stormy conditions were forecast along Spain’s east coast on Friday, local press said. Three deaths were reported in the floods: two in Caudete and one in Almeria.

Orihuela was one of the areas worst-hit by flooding, as the River Segura overflowed.

There were multiple flooded and impassable streets in Orihuela on Friday morning, police said, urging people to stay indoors as heavy rain returned. Police measured the floodwater at 300 liters per square meter late on September 12. Credit: Fotografía Kain Wolf (Victor M. Ortega) via Storyful
