The widow of an academic stabbed to death outside his home launched a crowdfunding campaign today to get “justice for my family and husband”.

Dr Jeroen Ensink, 41, was knifed on his doorstep in Islington in December 2015 as he went to post letters announcing the birth of his daughter Fleur, who was 11 days old.

His killer Femi Nandap, 23, pleaded guilty to manslaughter last year and was detained indefinitely at a psychiatric hospital.

Nandap had been arrested in Camden in May 2015 for possession of a 30cm kitchen knife and also bit a police officer. The charges against him were dropped six days before he killed Dr Ensink, a senior lecturer at the London School of Hygene and Tropical Medicine.

Today his widow Nadja Ensink-Teich, 38, launched a crowdfunding page to cover her legal costs as a pre-inquest hearing into her husband’s death was due to take place at St Pancras coroner’s court.

Ahead of the hearing, she said: “It should not have to come to this. There was never a proper investigation into the circumstances of Nandap.

“I think we deserve answers. I owe it to my daughter and our family and I want justice for my husband.”

The CrowdJustice.org page was established to raise money for the £5,000 legal costs Ms Ensink-Teich expects to incur, which could rise to £25,000.

Nandap was a serial offender with a history of mental health problems.

Ms Ensink-Teich said: “There are clear indications that the CPS should’ve known about Nandap and that he was dangerous.”

The CPS has said Nandap would have been free on bail even if the case against him had continued. Today it said: “Our heartfelt sympathies remain with Mrs Ensink-Teich.”
