Wigan Warriors fired up by 'better than them' remark made by Leigh Leopards star

Wigan head coach Matt Peet hinted pre-match comments by former Warriors player Umyla Hanley helped fire his side up to extend their Betfred Super League lead with a 24-6 win over Leigh. Hanley, son of rugby league superstar Ellery, had claimed “we know we’re better than them,” as he prepared to face his old side for the first time since leaving the club 15 months ago.

“It’s just doing my job for me really,” said Peet. “It’s just experience – I’m guessing his coach and team-mates might have had a word with him. I’d imagine if he had his time again he wouldn’t say that.”

Wigan were pushed to the brink by their near neighbours, who hit back to within two points through Brad Dwyer’s second-half try before brilliant finishes from Liam Marshall and Bevan French swung the game back Wigan’s way. Liam Farrell sealed victory on the hooter.

The manner of the performance, in a rugged encounter which saw Mike Cooper knocked cold and substituted within two minutes of the start, also pleased Peet, for whom it was ideal preparation for next Friday’s big showdown against St Helens.

“We came up against a really determined team who were determined to play and it was a challenge,” he added. “There were a lot of tests out there for us today and I think we delivered. As long as the lads can continue to look after one another and battle for one another, they’ll be OK.”
