Wikipedia’s Founder Says Apple Should Stop Selling iPhones In The UK If ‘Stupid’ Law Comes Into Effect

The government’s draft investigatory powers bill has got many people worrying about their privacy including Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia.

Mr Wales has declared his opposition to draft bill as it would ban fully encrypted communications, such as Apple’s iMessage.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘I would like to see Apple refuse to sell iPhone in UK if government bans end-to-end encryption.

‘Does Parliament dare be that stupid?’

The investigatory powers bill will be introduced today in its full form (Wednesday) to the House of Commons by Home Secretary Theresa May MP.

As it stands, it would require technology and internet companies to hand over communication data to the government when requested.

Apple have stated that they could not hand over iMessage data to the authorities even if they wanted to - due to the strong encryption used on the messaging service, reports the Independent.

Facebook, WhatsApp and Google are all currently planning similar levels of encryption…

So will the law ban the use of such popular messaging apps or will we see some serious changes before/if it enters into law?
