Wildfire Camera Captures Launch of NASA's Asteroid-Deflection Mission

The launch of a SpaceX rocket taking a NASA spacecraft to an asteroid was captured by a wildfire camera on November 23, with the bright flash briefly lighting up the nighttime footage.

The Falcon 9 rocket took off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California in a mission to test asteroid-deflecting technology, NASA said.

“The goal of the mission is to see if intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid is an effective way to change its course, should an Earth-threatening asteroid be discovered in the future,” NASA said in a blog post about the launch. Credit: ALERTWildfire via Storyful
