Winds Blow Ash and Gases From Cumbre Vieja Volcano Out to Sea

Lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma flowed into the Atlantic Ocean on September 29, forming a land mass and producing gases that may be damaging to the health of nearby residents, according to the Guardia Civil.

This footage filmed on Wednesday shows winds blowing ash clouds from the volcano out to sea, Twitter user @efadi_LP wrote in a tweet.

On Wednesday, the Council of La Palma said air quality remained “perfectly breathable” and local officials said it would be continuously monitored.

The eruption has forced at least 5,000 people to evacuate and destroyed more than 650 buildings on the island since September 19, El Pais reported. Credit: Idafe.com via Storyful
