Winter Lights 2018: Stunning festival returns to Canary Wharf for a fourth year

Canary Wharf’s Winter Lights festival has returned a fourth year with another display of some of the UK’s top light art.

From today until the end of the month, more than 30 sculptures, structures and installations will be on show around the area, and all will be completely free to visit.

Among the highlights this year is new commission Dazzling Dodecahedron, from UK artist Amberlights. The aptly named 3D piece is an immersive installation which visitors can actually go inside of, where they’ll be surrounded by the entire spectrum of colour. Another that promises to draw ‘Grammers is Halo, by Venividimultiplex. As seen in the gallery above, the Dutch group will suspend a giant halo – which represents the sun – above the Cabot Square fountain.

Keith Watson, who is curating the festival, said: “Since its inception the Winter Lights festival has really gathered pace and each year we strive to uncover new and exciting works to dazzle our visitors.

“The exhibition remains London’s only annual Light Art exhibition and after winning the Darc Awards 2017, we’re proud to be bringing more commissions and never-before-seen pieces to the UK. The calibre of artists this year is once again outstanding and features some of the best minds and creators in the field.

"Interaction and immersion are again key features of this year’s exhibition and are what differentiates us from other festivals of this kind. For us, it’s important that the pieces aren’t just spectacles to be admired from afar, but works of light art which people can engage with and experience.”
