London's Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park has closed today as Storm Bert batters the capital with dangerous winds. This joins all Royal Parks in an emergency closure, leaving thousands of would-be festive revelers forced to change their Sunday plans.

"All affected ticket holders have been contacted directly," organizers said in a statement, promising refunds or rebooking options for disappointed visitors. Winter Wonderland had opened on Thursday this week for the 2024 season.

A spokesperson for Winter Wonderland added: "The safety of our visitors and staff are our top priority and we are sorry for any disappointment caused. With better weather forecast in the coming week, we anticipate operating as normal from Monday, and look forward to welcoming guests again soon. Please keep an eye on our official channels for further updates."

The Royal Parks confirmed a blanket shutdown of all facilities including cafes, kiosks, and cycleways, with Monday reopening pending safety checks. There will also be no changing of the guard on Sunday.

London's Royal Parks consist of Hyde Park, St James's Park, Green Park, Regent's Park, Greenwich Park, Richmond Park, Bushy Park, Kensington Gardens and Brompton Cemetery.

Kew Gardens was also forced to shut its doors to the public yesterday and it repeated its closure announcement this morning, explaining that 'severe weather ' meant the centre would be closed.

The Christmas event Christmas at Kew is also cancelled this evening - a popular light trail with dazzling installations. Wakehurst Gardens in Sussex, part of the same parent company, is also closed.

It comes as The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning of wind for London and south east today (Sunday 21 November) with likely traffic disruption and power cuts. The weather warning is in place between 8am on Sun 24 Nov 2024 and 9pm.
