Wolverhampton road closed and buses diverted after ‘people sprayed with substance’ in street

A city road was closed in Wolverhampton after a ‘police incident’ with emergency services alerted. West Midlands Police confirmed it was called to Lichfield Street in the heart of the city shortly after 2.30pm on Thursday (September 26).

The road was shut off to through traffic with buses diverted. Police said two people were ‘sprayed with a substance’. An ambulance paramedic officer was called to the scene.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of an incident on Lichfield Street in Wolverhampton at around 2.50pm. A paramedic officer was sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews found a man. He did not wish to be assessed and we were stood down.”

National Express West Midlands said it had to divert 10 bus services in the city centre as a result of the incident and Lichfield Street being closed. It said: “The number 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 6A, 15, 16, 62 and 62A out of Wolverhampton are using Stafford Street and the Ring Road.”

West Midlands Police has confirmed it is investigating the incident involving a yet-to-be confirmed substance which was not believed to be dangerous. A spokesman for the force said: “We were called to Lichfield Street, Wolverhampton, shortly after 2.30pm on Thursday (September 26) after two people were sprayed with a substance.

“There were no injuries. We are investigating but don’t believe the substance sprayed was harmful or a risk to the public.
