Wolves are seeking special dispensation from the Premier League to clear Daniel Podence for their crucial game at Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

Podence, the £17 million signing, has been self-isolating after flying out to Portugal last week to attend a personal issue.

The winger returned to England last Monday and Wolves are hopeful that he can be involved for their potentially pivotal match at Bramall Lane later this week.

Last weekend the Government announced that sports teams involved in elite competition will be granted exemption from the 14-day travel quarantine rule.

Podence, 24, was expected to miss up to two of Wolves’s games, at Sheffield United and at home to Everton, under the previous rules.

But Wolves are now waiting for the green light from the Premier League to allow Podence to train with the squad at their Compton base on Tuesday morning.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves are in contention for a place in next season’s Champions League and are currently sixth in the table, so the quick return of Podence would be seen as a huge boost.

Signed from Olympiacos in January, Podence has made eight appearances for the Molineux club.
