Detectives are hunting for two men after a mother was abducted with her toddler and subjected to a brutal rape lasting around seven hours.

The two men snatched the woman, in her 30s, and her child around midday while they were on the seafront in Redcar and forced her into a car.

The men drove off to a different location where the woman was raped and held for between five and seven hours.

Police are appealing for information about the two men, who are both white, and may have been known to the victim. The driver has an identifying tattoo - the word "love" across his knuckles.

The mother and child had been near a boating lake when the dark saloon car drove towards them along a ramp, Cleveland Police said.

The two men got out and forced the pair into the back of the vehicle which was driven to Yearby, in Redcar, where the woman was raped.

She was let out of the car with her child a short distance from where the rape took place between 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm the same day.

They both ran across the road and towards a wooded area.

The driver of the car is described as white, in his late 20s or early 30s, between 5ft7 ins and 5ft10 ins tall, with short, brown hair of a large build and with a love tattoo on his knuckles.

The second man, also white and thought to be in his early 20s, is between 5ft5 ins and 5ft6 ins tall, of medium build, clean shaven, with brown hair and a local accent.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Matt Murphy-King said: “This has been a very traumatic ordeal for the victim and her child. Thankfully, incidents of this nature are rare and this is an isolated incident.

“There are a team of detectives working on this investigation and we have increased patrols in the local area.

"Although we are investigating that the attackers may have known the victim, as a precaution, I would encourage anyone in the local area to be extra vigilant.

“Neighbourhood officers are patrolling the area of Redcar sea front and anyone who may have information is urged to speak to an officer, or to call Cleveland Police or Crimestoppers.”

Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have seen two men in a dark saloon in the area of the seafront around the time of the incident or who may have seen the men or the vehicle in Yearby the same day.

They are also appealing to anyone who may have seen a woman and child in a distressed state in the area of Kirkleatham Lane in Redcar on Friday evening.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or at http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org
