Woman burned in suspected gas explosion at block of flats

A joint investigation between police and the fire service is under way following the explosion on Monday night.

A suspected gas explosion at a block of flats has left a woman with burns.

The explosion occurred at around 8.30pm on Monday evening at the Waun Las flats in Waunceirch, Neath, South Wales.

All residents in the four flats were evacuated and accounted for, while one of them, an elderly woman, was admitted to Morriston Hospital with burn injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said three fire crews from Neath, Port Talbot and an aerial appliance from Swansea were called to extinguish the fire.

South Wales Police said the occupants of the flats would be given accommodation until the building, which suffered extensive damage, is deemed safe enough for their return.

A spokesman said: “A joint investigation is under way between South Wales Police and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service to determine the cause of the incident.”
