Woman in 'critical condition' after fall from bridge at A69 junction near Hexham

A woman was in a critical condition in hospital on Thursday after a fall from a bridge above the A69 a day earlier.

The woman is understood to have fallen from a bridge near to the junction of the A69 and A6079 near to Hexham at around 3.35pm on Wednesday. She has then been involved in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle. The ambulance service, police and Great North Air Ambulance all attended.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At around 3.35pm on Wednesday, June 5, police received a report of concern for the welfare of a female on the A69 westbound, near to the Hexham exit. Emergency services attended the scene and found a woman had fallen from a bridge and collided with a heavy goods vehicle on the carriageway below.

“The woman was taken to hospital for treatment with serious injuries and remains there in a critical condition Her next of kin have been informed and are being offered support from officers.

“The road was closed for a short period of time, but has since been re-opened.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called to a person injured at the junction of the A69 and A6079 shortly after 3.30 this afternoon. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, a duty officer and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken by road to the Royal Victoria Infirmary."
