Woman dies on A12 after police alerted to 'concerns for welfare' with road closed for 4 hours

Police have confirmed a woman died on the A12 this morning (Sunday, January 19). The major road was shut southbound after Essex Police were alerted to concerns for the welfare of a woman close to Junction 11 (for the M25).

A spokesperson from Essex Police said: "We were called to concerns for the welfare of a woman close to Junction 11 of the A12 shortly after 5.30am on Sunday, January 19. A woman was found and sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, she died at the scene. Her family have been informed and are being supported. Enquiries are ongoing."

The A12 southbound reopened at about 10am following the police incident. The major road was shut on the southbound carriageway between Junction 12 (Brentwood) and Junction 11 (for the M25).

At the time of closure, a National Highways spokesperson said: "Our area team crews are en route to to assist with traffic management at the closure point." Drivers were urged to avoid the area where possible as a diversion route had to be put in place by the National Highways.
