A woman has died after falling from a bridge this morning (Friday, September 13). The incident led to multiple road closures as Leicestershire Police officers carried out what has been described as a "complex investigation".

Officers were called to reports that a woman had fallen from a bridge on the A606, near Great Casterton, in Rutland, shortly before 10am. They attended along with East Midlands Ambulance Service.

The woman, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead a short time later, a police spokeswoman said. She added that the death was not being treated as suspicious.

The A1 in Leicestershire was initially closed in both directions following the incident. While the northbound carriageway has since reopened, as of 3pm the southbound carriageway remains closed between the B1081 (Great Casterton) and the A47 (Wansford).

National Highways said the closure was expected to remain in place for several hours to enable "complex investigation works" to be carried out by police. A diversion is in place, with motorists advised to exit the A1 at A607 Harlaxton southbound junction and follow the diversion signs through Melton and Oakham.
