Authorities in Indiana say a woman died after a tire smashed into her car while she was driving.

The woman was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 near the 77 mile marker on Monday morning when her car was hit by the tire, which came from the rear of a Nissan pickup truck traveling eastbound on the highway, according to a press release from Indiana State Police.

The dislodged wheel then "bounced over the median" before colliding with the woman’s vehicle, "causing the roof and windshield to collapse."

The impact of the collision forced the woman’s vehicle "to go off the road" and into a "steep" ditch, ISP said.

The vehicle was later found “severely damaged” and lying on its side about 25 feet from the home near Corrill Street and Wyoming Street on the north side of the interstate, ISP said in its press release.

The woman was unresponsive when first responders arrived at the scene, according to state police. Despite receiving emergency medical aid, she was eventually pronounced dead.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victim, though they say her family has been notified.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing. The Marion County Coroner’s Office is assisting with the investigation, according to ISP.
