An 18-year-old student has been found dead in university halls just hours after her first night on campus.

The young woman was discovered at the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus on Sunday morning less than 24 hours after she enrolled, officials from the university have confirmed.

Emergency services rushed to the campus to treat the 18-year-old, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Kent Online reported.

A spokesman for the university told KentOnline: “We can confirm the death of a female student at our Canterbury campus on September 17.

“Next of kin have been informed and support is available for students and staff. Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.”

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Molly Hope, a fellow student at the university, told the student newspaper Inquire: “We were moving everyone in and it was a really positive and happy experience on Saturday.

“We arrived Sunday morning to continue helping students moving in but there were ambulances and police cars outside of Tyler Court.

“We were informed that there had been an incident and access to the flat in question was blocked off.”

A file is being prepared for the coroner and her next of kin has been informed.
