A woman was injured after a car crashed into an Indian restaurant in Tameside.

The Toyota vehicle smashed into the front of Lily's Vegetarian in Ashton-under-Lyne shortly before midday today (Wednesday). Firefighters were called to the scene in Oldham Road following the incident.

While the driver of the car escaped unharmed, a female pedestrian suffered minor injuries. The popular eatery was open at the time of the crash, but no customers or staff were hurt.

Restaurant boss Ritesh Sachdev described the incident as an "accident".

"The poor lady took a turning," he said. "It was very narrow. She was a new driver and has just come straight out.

"It has taken off two of the barrier poles protecting our land. They are stainless steel so it's ripped those out.

"One window is completely shattered. That's our deli area and there were customers in at the time, but luckily they were on the other side.

"The poor lady was really shaken up, it could have happened to anyone."
