A woman in labour turned up to a Florida polling centre to vote in the US presidential election and refused to go to hospital until she had cast her ballot, according to reports.

The woman’s husband ran into the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office to request a vote-by-mail ballot while she stayed in her car on Tuesday afternoon.

The expectant mother filled out the card to cast her vote before her husband drove her to the Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The couple, who have not been identified, did not explain why they had chosen to vote as the woman had gone into labour.

“Maybe she wanted to come in-person at one point and that’s why she was waiting, who knows. But she wouldn’t go to the hospital until she voted,” Eileen Deliz, an early voting clerk for the supervisor of elections, said.

“We are very, very busy, but when something like that happens it just makes our day.

“It kind of validates what we do [and] the importance of voting.”

People in the United States are able to cast their ballots — either by post or in-person — before the 3 November election day.

With 70 million votes already cast, early voting has been exceptionally popular this year, possibly because people are trying to avoid crowding at polling stations amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Florida is among the most important states on the electoral map as one of the eight swing states that Donald Trump and Joe Biden are competing to win.
