A new café has opened near Exeter's Marsh Barton station. It's the next big step for the owner who has grown her business from a baking hobby.

Earlier this week, Debbie Carroll threw open the doors of Cake & Crumb on Alphin Brook Road, a short walk away from the Marsh Barton train station, which opened in July 2023. The new café replaces Bake My Day, which closed in May this year, just nine months after opening. Owners Mirlan Almazeek and Jamilya Azigalieva have vowed to reopen in a new location.

Debbie initially started baking as a hobby and would make cakes for family members' birthdays. A few years ago she started to sell them, before branching out into operating a food van, selling hot drinks and sweet treats, as well as running a brownie box postal service.

The new café in Marsh Barton offers a small menu, which serves breakfast from early in the morning, lunches, hot and cold drinks and a range of baked goods. It opened for the first time on Monday (June 17) and Debbie says it has been a "great" first week.

She told DevonLive: "I've always been into baking as a hobby. I've always baked cakes for family and kids' birthdays. The last couple of years, I've been making them and selling them.

"I was a bit apprehensive about taking the next step because everything's a risk and sometimes I find myself a little bit out of my comfort zone but I've had a lot of support from my family and friends. They've been helping out to get things set up and helping me find my feet with it. My daughter is going to be working with me a few days a week.

"It's been a great week, I've loved it. It's been a lot better than I thought. The first couple of days were a bit chaotic but I'm really enjoying it now. I know now that I can do it.

"We're open from 7am so word is getting around that we're open early. We have had people coming in on breaks and at lunchtime and we've had walking groups and dogwalkers.
