Woman and Young Boy Killed as Boat Capsizes in Hudson River

A woman in her 40s and a seven-year-old boy died on Tuesday, July 12, when a boat capsized in the Hudson River between New York City and Hoboken.

The NYPD named the victims as Lindelia Vasquez, 47, and Julian Vasquez. They were not mother and son, police said, according to local media, but they were related and were from Colombia.

The NY Waterway ferry company said it responded to the incident north of the Pier 79 Midtown ferry terminal at around 3 pm. Two ferries, the Garden State and the John Stevens, arrived on the scene and their crews helped rescue nine people, NY Waterway said.

Crews from the NYPD, FDNY, and US Coast Guard also responded, and pulled others, including the two victims, from the water.

A total of 13 were on the boat, NBC New York said. Credit: Henry Kaden via Storyful
