A battle between the sexes and radio stations has kicked off, after a presenter from BBC Radio 4's Women's Hour criticised Radio 2 for its lack of diversity.

Pointing out the station's lack of female or BME presenters in its daytime line-up, Jane Garvey argued that Radio 2 does not accurately reflect or represent the Britain she knows.

Despite admitting she was a listener, Jane said (via The Sun): "But I would [be], wouldn't I? I'm a 52-year-old white woman.

"I'm not certain it should be like that in the 21st century. Radio 2 doesn't look or sound much like the Britain I know."

Radio 2's daytime schedule currently includes Chris Evans, Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine, Steve Wright and Simon Mayo, so it does seem as though Jane has a point.

Digital Spy reached out to the BBC for comment, who have said that Radio 2's full roster of presenters does include a number of women and BME presenters.

In a statement, they said: "Radio 2 has 15 million listeners who enjoy music, entertainment, documentaries and current affairs delivered by a roster of presenters.

"[T]hat includes Jo Whiley, Zoe Ball, Moira Stuart, Sara Cox, Clare Teal, Liza Tarbuck, Levi Roots, Trevor Nelson, Clare Balding, Craig Charles and Elaine Paige."

Despite this, Jane is adamant that the station can afford to take risks by replacing their 'legendary' male daytime presenters, as the music it plays is "inoffensive".

"They're going to get an audience. I'm not sure presenters are as significant as people would have you believe," she argued.
