A new report reveals that only one in five Grammy nominations and wins over the past eight years have been awarded to female artists.

The study, conducted by Akas (Addy Kassova Audience Strategy), found that men dominated 94% of the Grammy categories from 2017 to 2024, with women making up just 19% of those nominated and winning awards during this period. Despite global stars such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish clinching three major awards in 2024 – including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year – the report discovered that only 24% of nominees and 32% of winners across the 94 categories last year were women.

The Missing Voices Of Women In Music And Music News report analysed the gender of 8,580 nominations and 2,003 wins across 103 categories between 2017 and 2024, noting that some categories had been removed and others introduced during this eight-year span.

The report also highlighted that several Grammy Award categories, including the Producer of the Year (non-classical) prize, have not seen a female winner for many years. Past recipients of this prestigious award include Pharrell Williams, Greg Kurstin, Andrew Watt and Finneas O’Connell, Billie Eilish’s brother, for the hit album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Jack Antonoff, who produced Swift’s album Midnights, won the award in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

US singer Taylor Swift made Grammy history last year as the first person to win Album of the Year four times, following her victory for Midnights, her 10th album. However, it's not just the artist who receives a Grammy in this category – the team of producers, mixers, sound engineers and songwriters also get awards.

This group consisted of 11 men and two women, one of whom was Swift herself. Solo female singers and all-female bands have been absent from the Metal Performance and Orchestral Performance categories for the past eight years.

This year, women have achieved their highest number of nominations in the last nine years across the 1,101 nominations in 94 categories. However, with only 28% of the nominations, they are yet to reach one third of the total nods, according to the report.

The study's methodology clarified that the women identified were either solo women or members of all-female groups. A separate desk research analysis was conducted to correctly identify non-binary artists and groups among the Grammy nominees.

Researcher and journalist Luba Kassova, who authored the report, expressed her shock at discovering that "women have never even reached a third of nominations or wins in any given year". The 67th Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Beyonce is at the forefront with 11 nominations for her chart-topping country music album Cowboy Carter, which served as the sequel to the first part of the trilogy, Renaissance. The American icon made history at the 2023 Grammys ceremony, setting a record for the most awards won in a lifetime after receiving her 32nd accolade.
