Women's Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg heads shortlist for BBC's Women Footballer of the Year

Ada Hegerberg heads the shortlist of players named for BBC’s Women’s Footballer of the Year award.

Hegerberg, 23, made history in 2018 when she was named the first women’s winner of the Ballon d’Or.

She currently plays club football for Lyon and with 50 days until the start of the Women’s World Cup in France, voting is now open.

Upon her nomination for the BBC award, Hegerberg said: “It’s amazing to be nominated. It’s a big deal for me and a great honour.

“It’s something that pushes me and gives me a lot of inspiration.”

The Norwegian international is joined on the list by the likes of Australia’s Sam Kerr.

Matildas star Kerr is the only nominee listed as playing with two clubs, both her native Perth Glory as well as Chicago Red Stars.

Denmark’s Pernille Harder, USA’s Lindsey Horan and Japan’s Saki Kumagai make up the remainder of the shortlist.

The shortlist was selected by a large panel of experts involved in the game from all around the world, including coaches, players, administrators and journalists.

The vote will close on May 2 (0800 GMT). Make sure to have your say here.
