Yahoo News Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins won’t direct Marvel film because bosses want ‘full control’
Patty Jenkins, who directed DC film Wonder Woman, has said she won’t work with Marvel Studios as their bosses are too controlling.
The filmmaker was hired to direct Thor sequel The Dark World, which was released in 2011, but stepped down before Alan Taylor took over.
Speaking about her decision in a new interview, Jenkins said that, while she has no personal vendetta against the people who work for Marvel, she has an issue with the fact “they want full control over their movies”.
“The director is under control,” she told French magazine Premiere, adding: “Yes, it can happen. Furthermore, It shows immediately if a director cannot impose his/her vision. When this is the case, I get the impression that these people are doing a different job than me.”
Jenkins also revealed she turned down the chance to direct DC ensemble film Justice League because “unlike other directors, I don’t really care about shared universes”.
She dismissed such films for having “too many characters”.
Jenkins returned to direct the Wonder Woman sequel, starring Gal Gadot, which will be released on 14 August, and expressed her happiness with the end result.
“With Wonder Woman 1984, I think I did exactly what I wanted,” she said. “And then, everything a superhero movie needs comes naturally to me: I love shooting great action scenes versus great sets. I really enjoy it.”
