Wonka has been crowned the UK's top-selling home entertainment film of 2024, according to the British Association For Screen Entertainment (Base).

The movie, which stars Oscar-nominated actor Timothee Chalamet, provides a backstory for the eccentric Willy Wonka character from Roald Dahl's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. Distributed by Warner Bros and directed by Paul King, the film topped the US box office over the new year’s weekend in 2023 following its December release.

Over the past year, it has amassed 821,000 sales and rental units across digital and disc formats in the UK, as per the Official Charts Company (OCC). Dune: Part Two, another Chalamet-starrer, was the best-selling title on disc, shifting 132,000 copies on Blu-ray and DVD, and secured second place in the combined disc and digital chart with 817,000 units sold overall.

Meanwhile, Sir Christopher Nolan's historical epic Oppenheimer, featuring Irish actor Cillian Murphy as "the father of the atomic bomb", took third place with total sales of 697,000. The film bagged numerous awards in 2024, including the best picture Oscar. Rounding out the top five were action flick Deadpool And Wolverine and fantasy comedy Barbie.

The film directed by Greta Gerwig, which spotlights the iconic Mattel doll with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling taking lead roles, clinched the title of 2023's most purchased home entertainment movie in the UK. According to Base, in 2024, purchasing films for home viewing (electronic sell-through or EST) topped the list as the preferred method for UK audiences to buy and own movies.

Liz Bales, chief executive of the organisation, commented: "This promises to be another great year for visual entertainment audiences in the UK."
