Wood Green stabbing: Teenager killed as man shot and stabbed in London street brawl

A teenager has died after being stabbed in a London street brawl involving attackers armed with a sword, gun and knives.

The 19-year-old man was found injured in Wood Green after police were called to reports of a group of people fighting in a residential street.

“Two men, believed to be aged 19 and 20, were found with stab injuries,” a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said.

“The two men were both treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

“Despite the efforts of doctors, the 19-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after 3am."

Police said the 20-year-old victim also suffered shotgun injuries, but his condition was not believed to be life-threatening.

The fight took place shortly after 8pm on Friday and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“This murder took place at a busy time of night in a heavy footfall area," Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin said.

“My team has established that the attackers were armed with at least one firearm, knives and a samurai sword. Some, or possibly all, were riding bikes.

“I know that people may be reluctant or afraid to speak with police, but making a single call could help to remove dangerous, violent individuals from your area and all information provided will be treated in the strictest confidence."

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue. A damaged car was also found at the scene, which remains cordoned off by police.

The killing came a day after a man was stabbed to death at a youth club in Brixton, south London.

The 23-year-old victim was murdered on Thursday in what police described as a “premeditated and targeted” attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Vandenberg said the “incident started outside the club before the victim was chased inside and attacked”.

“The youth club was open at the time and sadly many young people present would have witnessed what unfolded,” he added.

"Many of them will be shocked and traumatised by what they saw and perhaps fearful of potential reprisals if they speak to police. I would urge them to get in touch.”

It came after the Metropolitan Police commissioner Cressida Dick said fatal stabbings involving victims under 25 in London were starting to fall.

The number of people killed in London hit a 10-year high in 2018 and more than a fifth of victims were children and teenagers.

The 134 homicides recorded by the Metropolitan Police included 24 where the victims were aged 19 or under.

Fatal stabbings hit a record high across England and Wales in the year to March 2018, when 285 people were knifed to death.

Police have called for increased funding to tackle rising violent crime, while critics have blamed government budget cuts to youth services and preventative work.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
