Finally, some good news in 2020... if it's true. Earlier today a social media account claiming to be Woolworths announced it is reopening three high street stores in 2021.

The store, which was known for its homeware, toys, and - most importantly - its iconic pick ‘n’ mix said: “Here to save 2020! Woolworths is coming back to your high street, as a physical store! A couple of legal things to get sorted, but we’re full steam ahead at Woolworths HQ. We want to get this right, so we need your help. What do you want at your UK #YourWoolworths?”

And another tweet added, “Throughout this week, we’ll have announcements and chances to win gift cards for Woolworths and gift cards for other retailers on your high street. Welcome back to Woolworths!”

It just gets better and better! And seems too good to be true, right?!

Woolworths went into administration in 2008, and the very last Woolies closed its doors for the final time in 2009. Until now that is!

But maybe it wouldn't be a totally surprise to see Woolworths coming back. Back in April 2017, former Woolworths director Tony Page hinted that Woolies could grace our high street once again. He told the Daily Star: “I am still emotionally attached to it. I still think it has got a role in the future.”

As you can imagine, people on Twitter were thrilled at the prospect of getting their sticky little fingers on Woolies pick ‘n’ mix again.

But in what is potentially one of the biggest plot twist's... is it all just one big hoax?

As Tom Witherow, business correspondent for the Daily Mail, rightly pointed out on social media the spelling mistake in the tweet, from an account with 900 followers, is surely a red flag?

And one quick phone call to the company's PR confirmed that. A spokesperson for The Very Group said: 'We own the Woolworths trademark in the UK. The Twitter account UKWoolworths is not connected to The Very Group.'

SO, whoever is behind this cruel, cruel prank has managed to set the internet on fire, all for our love of pick 'n' mix.

We can only dream...
