World Cup 2022 news LIVE: England vs Wales build-up as Gareth Southgate hints at starting 11

England and Wales will do battle in a decisive World Cup 2022 Group B match on Tuesday evening with places in the knockout stages in Qatar up for grabs for both teams.

England’s path to the last 16 looks the much simpler of the two as they only need to avoid defeat by four or more goals against their British rivals to secure a place in the second round. The Three Lions will have their eyes on topping the group however, which they would achieve with victory over a side they haven’t lost to since 1984, while a draw would likely also be enough providing Iran don’t beat the United States.

Not everything is rosy in the England camp though, with Friday’s frustrating 0-0 draw with USA seeing the team come in for plenty of criticism. Boss Gareth Southgate has some selection headaches and is unlikely to name an unchanged starting 11 for the third game running after his team were overrun in midfield by the US. Southgate has also admitted he needs to manage the fitness of some of his players, saying: “We cannot roll out Jude Bellingham for 90 minutes every game. We’ve got to look after him and Jordan Henderson has been training really well. It wasn’t a gamble to play Harry Kane, either. He’s had a whack on his foot so there is a bit of discomfort when he’s striking the ball but we are not talking about taking any risk with him.”

Wales’ World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread after an opening 1-1 draw with USA was followed by a disheartening 2-0 defeat to Iran, where two late goals following Wayne Hennessey’s red card cost them dearly. To qualify for the last 16 at their first World Cup since 1958, Robert Page’s men - led by the talismanic Gareth Bale - need to beat England and hope for a draw between the US and Iran. Alternatively, an unlikely four-goal victory over their neighbours would also secure a place in the knockouts.

Bale confident Wales can shock England

16:38 , Lawrence Ostlere

Gareth Bale insists Wales can upset England and provide another surprise in a World Cup of shock results.

Wales must beat England for the first time since 1984 on Tuesday to be in with a chance of making the knockout phase.

Even then, unless England are beaten by a four-goal margin, Wales need Iran and the United States to draw their final match to make the round of 16 in Qatar.

It is a tall order for a Wales side who have won only once in 10 games, but Bale says they can draw on respective underdog victories for Japan, Morocco and Saudi Arabia over Germany, Belgium and Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.

“There’s been a few shocks in the tournament already and there’s no reason why we can’t do the same,” the 33-year-old said.

Wales must win to give themselves hope

15:05 , Lawrence Ostlere

For Wales, the jeopardy is much higher.

Bottom of the group with one point from their first two matches, Wales must win to have any chance of reaching the round of 16 at its first World Cup since 1958.

“That’s the hurt at the moment,” said midfielder Joe Allen. “It’s a feeling of missed opportunity in the first two games.”

“Our focus now moves onto getting on the training pitch, putting in the work and preparing for the performance of our lives against England,” he added.

Wales will be looking for inspiration from Gareth Bale if they are to win against England for the first time since 1984.

The Los Angeles FC forward came into the tournament on the back of just one game since the start of October and has looked labored in his performances.

England can look back for inspiration

14:47 , Lawrence Ostlere

If England need any added motivation ahead of its final World Cup group game against Wales on Tuesday, they only has to watch a certain video from 2016.

Footage of Wales players celebrating wildly as their UK neighbour crashed out of the European Championship after losing to Iceland went viral at the time.

England were humiliated. Wales, who lost 2-1 to the Three Lions in the group stage but went on to reach the semifinal, were jubilant.

Much has changed since then — a point England forward Marcus Rashford made ahead of the Group B match.

“I don’t think it takes a genius to see how we’ve improved since 2016. For me it feels like a completely different team. We’ve come on so much. We’ve learned a lot about ourselves along the way,” he said.

“Back in 2016, if you look at that performance when we got knocked out the Euros, it is a million miles off where we are now. You cannot really compare the two situations.”

That sentiment is backed up by England’s tournament performances over the last four years — reaching the semifinals of the World Cup in 2018 and the final of last year’s European Championship, which they lost on penalties to Italy.

England are among the favorites to triumph in Qatar and only need a point against Wales to guarantee qualification to the knockout stages. Depending on goal difference, England could still progress even if they lose that match.

Ben White missing from England training

13:59 , Lawrence Ostlere

Ben White missed England training through illness on the eve of the World Cup clash with Wales.

Gareth Southgate’s men will progress to the knockout phase if they avoid a four-goal defeat against their neighbours in the Group B finale.

England centre-back White has yet to play a minute in Qatar and looks set to miss the Wales game having sat out training on Monday at the Al Wakrah Sports Complex.

The remaining 25 members of the squad trained in 30-degree heat, including James Maddison as he pushes to be involved following a knee complaint.

England manager Southgate will be joined by vice-captain Jordan Henderson later at the press conference previewing Tuesday’s match at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.

Cameroon 3-3 Serbia

13:23 , Lawrence Ostlere

Serbia have got used to doing things the hard way on their road to Qatar. The Eagles came from behind three times on their journey to this World Cup, including a last-gasp, finals-sealing winner against Portugal in Lisbon back in November of last year. Now, after a rollercoaster 3-3 draw with Cameroon, they will have to go to the well again if they are to progress from Group G.

Fancied by many as a dark horse at this tournament, a two-goal second-half lead thrown away here at the Al Janoub Stadium could cost them dear as they look to make it to the last-16 for the first time this century, goals from Strahinja Pavlovic, Sergej Milinkovic Savic and Aleksandar Mitrovic cancelled out by a furious Cameroonian comeback.

The World Cup that Qatar would prefer you ignore

12:19 , Lawrence Ostlere

It is one of regular moments of harsh reality that takes you out of the illusion that is this World Cup. As the taxi driver drops the group off, there is a sudden plea. It is not for a five-star rating.

“Can you give me a tip please,” he says. “I have no money to eat.”

The driver, of south Asian descent, sends almost everything he earns back to his family. This is supposed to be the long-awaited period when such workers can generate income due to the number of visitors to Qatar but here is another who is just starving.

Anyone who has been in Doha for the first week of this World Cup would have had many similar stories pass in front of their eyes. The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre said on Sunday that there had been six cases of migrant worker abuse reported in that time alone.

This is the side of the World Cup that Qatar would prefer you ignore, but that is unavoidable, given they are utterly essential to the running of this tournament.

Southgate on Foden

12:05 , Lawrence Ostlere

“We are intending to be here as long as we can and he is a super player. We think the world of him and he is going to play a big part,” Southgate told ITV Sport.

“We love Phil. He’s a super player. He’s obviously been into the first game (v Iran). We decided not to put him into the second but he is going to play an important part in this tournament for us. There is no question about that.”

Gareth Southgate hints Phil Foden will start against Wales

11:50 , Lawrence Ostlere

Gareth Southgate insists Phil Foden has a big part to play in England’s World Cup campaign in a hint the Manchester City star could start against Wales on Tuesday night.

The Manchester City midfielder has played just 19 minutes of football in Qatar across England’s opening two games. He came off the bench in the opening 6-2 thrashing of Iran but was an unused substitute in Friday’s goalless stalemate with the USA.

There was widespread clamour for Foden to be introduced and Southgate was criticised for not utilising the 22-year-old as his side struggled to create chances at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Jordan Pickford relishing ‘tough game’ against Wales

11:31 , Lawrence Ostlere

Jordan Pickford believes the rivalry between England and Wales is the kind that makes football “great” and warned not to underestimate Rob Page’s side.

The neighbouring nations clash at the World Cup in the final round of Group B matches on Tuesday, with England all-but through and Wales almost certainly heading home.

Both have so far drawn with the United States but, while Gareth Southgate’s side beat Iran 6-2, Wales slipped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

There is likely to be more of an atmosphere inside Ahmed bin Ali Stadium than at the majority of World Cup matches so far and Pickford is looking forward to something akin to a derby day.

Wales will play for more than just pride against England, says Jack Grealish

11:13 , Luke Baker

England attacker Jack Grealish has warned that Wales will be playing for more than just pride when the sides meet at the World Cup on Tuesday.

The neighbouring nations clash at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in their final Group B game.

While England are favourites to progress as group winners despite an uninspiring goalless draw against the United States on Friday which left some supporters jeering at full-time, Wales are on the cusp of elimination.

Robert Page’s side also drew with the USA but were deservedly beaten by Iran in their second game. They now need a minor miracle to get out of the group but could yet send England home with a big win.

Despite the prospect of a 4-0 Wales victory – the result required to eliminate Gareth Southgate’s men and advance in their place – being a very unlikely outcome in Al Rayyan, Grealish insists it will still be a fixture charged with intensity.

James Maddison back in England training ahead of final World Cup group match with Wales

11:02 , Luke Baker

James Maddison returned to England football team training on Saturday following rehabilitation for a knee injury.

The 26-year-old was unavailable for the 6-2 win against Iran and 0-0 draw with the United States due to the issue that led to his first-half substitution in Leicester’s final match before the World Cup 2022. Maddison downplayed concerns over the injury and spoke about a positive scan upon England’s arrival in Qatar, but the midfielder has been conspicuous by his absence from training.

The midfielder returned to the group on Saturday as he joined the 13 non-starters from Friday night’s draw with the USA in training at their Al Wakrah Sports Complex base.

Jordan Henderson, who came off the bench in the second half against the USA, was the only non-starter that worked away from the group as he did an individualised programme indoors alongside those that started.

Gareth Southgate has so far started Mason Mount and Jude Bellingham along with Declan Rice in both fixtures so far, but England’s draw with USA was notable for a lack of incisive passing, runners from deep and general adventurism from the Three Lions.

Maddison only has one cap to his name so far and will hope to get an opportunity to add to that against the Dragons and beyond into the knockouts.

He was one of the most talked-about players before the squad was announced due to his form with Leicester, with many predicting Southgate would continue to overlook him.

Brennan Johnson convinced Wales are capable of beating England

10:51 , Luke Baker

Brennan Johnson insists Wales can shock England and keep their World Cup dream alive.

Wales’ hopes of making the knockout stages were left hanging by a thread after losing 2-0 to Iran. England’s goalless draw with the United States on Friday night means that Wales still have a path to the round of 16, but qualification is out of their own hands unless they beat Gareth Southgate’s side by a four-goal margin.

More realistically, Wales must beat England on Tuesday – something they have not achieved since 1984 – while hoping Iran and United States draw their final game. That would see Wales finish behind England and above Iran in second spot on goal difference, the first deciding factor for teams on equal number of points at this World Cup.

On extending Wales’ World Cup stay, Johnson said: “It’s going to take a win against England for us to have a chance. We don’t know what’s going to happen, but we do know that all the boys are going to give it everything they’ve got.

“It’s definitely possible we can beat them. It’s going to take a huge effort but it’s something we are ready for.”

England manager Gareth Southgate would go ‘bonkers’ if he listened to World Cup criticism

10:40 , Luke Baker

Gareth Southgate believes he would be at risk of going “bonkers” if he chose to engage with the noise around England’s performances and the criticism of his selections and has maintained that he will keep doing things his way, writes Mark Critchley in Doha.

Southgate’s critics have grown louder over the past year, with England winning just one of their last eight games, and his side were booed at full time of Friday’s drab goalless draw with the United States.

That is despite the 52-year-old having led England to the latter stages of the last two major tournaments and remaining top of Group B, with only a point required against Wales on Tuesday to reach the last-16 of the World Cup.

After six years in the job, Southgate has grown used to having his every call questioned, but he has purposely shut himself off from the debate around his decisions while in Qatar in order to not let it influence him.

“I am lucky. I am locked away in a hotel with no telly on. But I don’t need to see it because I know what [the criticism] will be,” he said. “It is a deliberate disengagement. Because if I listen to everything, I either go bonkers or you start to doubt yourself and you listen to too many things.

England warned Wales are ‘wounded animal’ ahead of World Cup meeting

10:29 , Luke Baker

Chris Mepham has warned England to beware of the “wounded animal” of a Wales with nothing to lose when they bow out of the World Cup on Tuesday, writes Richard Jolly.

Wales’ chances of qualification in effect disappeared with the 2-0 defeat to Iran but defender Mepham feels that will make Robert Page’s team more dangerous now they can take the handbrake off.

And he takes heart from their record of troubling elite teams in the past as he vowed to give England a tough game.

“Handbrake off now, we need to go for it,” the Bournemouth centre-back said. “We’ve nothing to lose and sometimes that’s quite dangerous for other teams, when you’ve nothing to lose, a wounded animal. We have to take the handbrake off and go for it against England.

“If there’s ever a game the group will be motivated for, it’d be that one. We’ve shown in the past against quality teams, we can match them. We need to dig deep against England, they’re a top side.”

Jonny Williams vows to film Wales celebrations again if they beat England

10:18 , Luke Baker

Jonny Williams says he will not be the only cameraman inside the Wales squad should they produce a stunning World Cup win against England.

Swindon midfielder Williams filmed the famous video of Wales players celebrating England’s Euro 2016 exit to minnows Iceland.

The video was subsequently leaked on social media, sparking outrage among many England fans that another home nation should celebrate them being knocked out of a major tournament.

Williams said: “I was just the cameraman to be fair. I was videoing it and put it in the WhatsApp group. It ended up getting leaked and the manager (Chris Coleman) wasn’t too bothered so I was alright.

“A lot of things went in that group chat that trip, but the only thing was there was a lot of players in that chat that weren’t in the squad at the time. I think it was every Wales player that had played the last few years and I didn’t know that. It was the summer and people were on holiday and it got leaked. We never found out who leaked it, but I get blamed anyway. There is much more tighter security now.”

Luke Shaw reveals England’s extra motivation to beat Wales in World Cup clash

10:07 , Luke Baker

Luke Shaw believes the way Wales celebrated England’s elimination from Euro 2016 will add extra motivation to their World Cup clash – but insists Gareth Southgate’s side are too respectful to follow suit.

The neighbouring nations meet at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Tuesday in their final Group B game.

While England are favourites to progress as group winners despite an uninspiring goalless draw against the United States on Friday which left some supporters jeering at full-time, Wales are on the cusp of elimination.

Robert Page’s side also drew with the USA but were deservedly beaten by Iran in their second game.

Gareth Southgate tells England to ‘match the spirit’ of a ‘wounded’ Wales in World Cup clash

09:56 , Luke Baker

Gareth Southgate says his players need to show intelligence and spirit to halt a “wounded” Wales side that will be “desperate to beat the English” on the world stage.

Having opened Group B with a stunning 6-2 victory against Iran and then drawn 0-0 with the United States, last year’s Euros runners-up are well placed to reach the World Cup last 16.

England will progress so long as they avoid a four-goal defeat to Wales, whose manager Robert Page appeared to write off their hopes after the late 2-0 loss to Iran followed their 1-1 draw with the US.

Their chances of reaching the knockout phase may be hanging by a thread but Southgate knows Tuesday’s opponents will be desperate to secure a first World Cup win since 1958.

“We have got to play well,” Southgate said ahead of the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium showdown. “We are going to play an opponent that is wounded and, like everybody else, desperate to beat the English. We know what that will be.

Wales star Ben Davies appeared to show support to Spurs teammate Harry Kane amid speculation he may be rested for tomorrow’s clash. Davies also acknowledged that Wales have a challenge taking on the Three Lions, and they must win this game to advance.

“Harry’s a world-class player and he’s one of the best players in the world”, he told reporters.

“He’s obviously going to make any team better with him in there, but that obviously doesn’t mean that England haven’t got very capable replacements to come in.”

Joe Allen defends Wales’ star pair Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey amid criticism

09:34 , Luke Baker

Joe Allen has defended Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey amid criticism that Wales’ star pair have failed to deliver at the World Cup 2022.

Skipper Bale and Ramsey have led Wales’ so-called ‘Golden Generation’ to dizzy heights over the past decade.

Wales have reached a first World Cup for 64 years on the back of qualification for two European Championships, the first of which saw them reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

But Bale, 33, and Ramsey, 31, have struggled to make an impact at Qatar 2022 and Wales are on the brink of a swift World Cup exit.

“They’re two incredible players, they are and they have been for our country,” Allen said ahead of Tuesday’s final group game against England in Doha. “I don’t think there’s anyone else in the squad who’s reached the heights they’re capable of.

Fans ready to party as England v Wales World Cup showdown looms

09:23 , Luke Baker

England and Wales fans are gearing up for their World Cup showdown, as it emerged £1 million has been spent on alcohol to cater for Red Wall supporters in Qatar.

The so-called “Battle of Britain” – which will see both home nations go head-to-head as Group B rivals – is set to take place on Tuesday from 7pm UK time.

England landed the first blow off the pitch over the weekend as their supporters triumphed over their Welsh counterparts in the final of a five-a-side football tournament in Doha, despite losing to them in the opening game.

Wales’ World Cup ambitions are hanging by a thread and they must win on Tuesday if they are to have a chance of progressing to the knockout stages, while England top the group and need just a point to reach the last 16.

Iran’s win over Wales left members of the travelling Red Wall feeling “sombre”. But fans said the set-back had not stopped them from enjoying their time in Qatar – as the organiser behind a series of match day parties for Wales fans said £1 million had been spent on alcohol.

Kalvin Phillips backs Phil Foden to shine for England if given the chance

09:11 , Luke Baker

Phil Foden will “shine” at the World Cup if given the chance to do so, according to England and Manchester City team-mate Kalvin Phillips.

There was widespread clamour for Foden to be introduced off the bench as England were held to a drab 0-0 draw in Friday’s Group B meeting with the United States and manager Gareth Southgate was criticised for not utilising the 22-year-old as his side struggled to create chances at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Victory over the USA would have sent England through into the round of 16 but they could not find a breakthrough, only intensifying the calls for Foden to start Tuesday’s clash against Wales and Phillips believes Foden would grab his opportunity with both hands were he to force his way into Southgate’s XI.

“I think, when he is given the chance, he will shine and he is just waiting for that chance,” he said. “He knows it is going to be difficult, obviously, to get into the team after we’ve played so well so he is just waiting for the right moment and once that comes I think he will kick on and start flying.

“I think Phil can offer a lot of things. Obviously he is an unbelievable talent, unbelievable technically and he works hard.

“I think for me his best role is probably as a number 10 – I think in that role where he can float about, get on the ball and do whatever he wants to do. You see him when he takes it past people, you’ve seen the assists and the goals that he’s got this year, he’s a real threat.”

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar began on 20 November as 32 teams aim to reach the final and become world champions on 18 December.

The tournament is the first to be held in the Arab world and only the second to take place in Asia, after Japan and South Korea joint-hosted the event in 2002. This edition will be the last to feature just 32 teams, with the tournament being expanded from 2026 onwards in order to feature 48 nations.

Reigning champions France are among the favourites, though no team has successfully defended the World Cup since Brazil in 1962, alongside fellow European sides England, Spain, and Belgium. Brazil and Argentina will also likely feature in the knockout stages, while Senegal could represent Africa’s biggest hopes of winning for the first time.

England meet play-off winners Wales in Group B with USA and Iran. Spain and Germany have been drawn in a tough-looking Group E with Japan and Costa Rica, while Portugal meet Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea in a well-balanced Group H.

Joe Allen calls on Wales to produce ‘performance of our lives’ against England at World Cup

08:35 , Luke Baker

Joe Allen believes Wales need the “performance of their lives” to beat England and make World Cup progress.

Wales must beat England for the first time in 38 years on Tuesday to be in with a chance of making the knockout stage. Even then, unless England are beaten by a four-goal margin, Wales will need Iran and the United States to draw their final match to make the round of 16 in Qatar.

“I think everyone is hurting because of the situation we find ourselves in and the disappointment of the result (losing 2-0 to Iran) and only having one point after two games,” said Allen, who returned as a substitute in Friday’s defeat after two months out with a hamstring problem.

“That’s the hurt at the moment. It’s a feeling of missed opportunity in the first two games. We’ve had the time needed to digest that disappointment. Our focus now moves onto getting on the training pitch, putting in the work and preparing for the performance of our lives against England.”

What do Wales need to do to qualify for World Cup last 16?

08:26 , Luke Baker

Wales suffered a crushing loss to Iran and now look poised to miss out on a place in the last 16 at the World Cup.

All hope is not lost though for Robert Page’s side, who face England in the final game.

Gareth Southgate’s side are poised to advance, despite being held by the USA, and they currently lead Group B on four points.

Wales must therefore leapfrog Iran, on three points, and the USA, third on two points, or face an early trip home.

Here are the permutations for Wales to advance to the last 16 and finish top:

One World Cup match stands between England and the last 16 at Qatar.

A draw with the USA puts Gareth Southgate’s side on four points after two games, with the 6-2 thrashing of Iran also boosting their goal difference.

Wales await in the final group stage match, with England in prime position to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

Top spot is also valuable, knowing they will avoid the winners of Group A should they hold on, with Iran just a point behind on three points, USA on two and Wales bottom on one.

Gareth Southgate’s selection headache

08:13 , Luke Baker

Gareth Southgate has some selection headaches and is unlikely to name an unchanged starting 11 for the third game running after his team were overrun in midfield by the US during Friday’s 0-0 draw.

Southgate has also admitted he needs to manage the fitness of some of his players, saying: “We’re going to have to look at it over the next couple of days and see where the energy levels are and the best way to approach it.

“The game against the US was always going to be an extreme test of our athleticism because you’re playing a team that is one of the most athletic in the tournament. I thought we were just a little bit low on energy in one or two positions but I’m not unhappy because I knew it was going to be difficult to get at their defence.

“And we cannot roll out Jude [Bellingham] for 90 minutes every game. We’ve got to look after him and Jordan Henderson has been training really well.

“It wasn’t a gamble to play Harry [Kane], either. He’s had a whack on his foot so there is a bit of discomfort when he’s striking the ball but we are not talking about taking any risk with him. But I’ve got to assess how everybody is.

“Then I’ve also got to consider refreshing certain positions because we have got a good squad and these games are taking a lot out of people.”

England vs Wales

08:10 , Luke Baker

Welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of the build-up to England and Wales’ decisive World Cup 2022 Group B match on Tuesday evening with places in the knockout stages in Qatar up for grabs for both teams.
