World Cup: Fifa president Gianni Infantino jeered by England and Wales fans

England and Wales fans briefly joined in unison on Tuesday night as Fifa president Gianni Infantino was greeted by a chorus of boos.

Infantino was present at the Al Rayyan stadium and was pictured on the large screens during England’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Wales, a result which set Gareth Southgate’s side up with a World Cup last 16 meeting against Senegal on Sunday.

Infantino has taken a silent stance since his extraordinary opening press conference on the eve of the World Cup.

In an hour-long monologue, Infantino accused Western countries of “hypocrisy” saying they were not in a position to give “moral lessons” to other nations over Qatar’s hosting of football’s showpiece.

Ten days on and, having been regularly spotted at various stadiums across Qatar during the group stages, Infantino received short shrift from supporters and was roundly jeered when he appeared on screens in the second- half of England’s victory.

Earlier on Tuesday, the fan who ran onto the field during the Portugal and Uruguay match wearing a T-shirt that read ‘Save Ukraine‘ and ‘Respect for Iranian Women‘ on the back, revealed that Infantino had helped in his release.

Ferri was tackled by security at the Lusail Stadium and later said that he faced no charges. “No legal consequences, I am free,” he wrote on social media.

He later told Catalan radio station RAC 1 that Infantino “came to me personally [and] resolved the situation”.

Qatar's Supreme Committee revealed that Ferri had also been banned from remaining World Cup matches.
