Raymond van Barneveld has been knocked out of the World Darts Championship after a 3-1 second-round defeat to Rob Cross.

It was a much-anticipated clash, between two former world champions. The Dutchman won the tournament in 2007, with Cross coming out on top against Phil Taylor in the 2018 final.

Van Barneveld took the opening set as he made his opponent pay for some incredibly low scoring in the early stages of the match.

But Cross found his form, and threw six 180s in the next three sets as he won them all to book his place in the tournament after Christmas.

After a first-round defeat to Darin Young at Ally Pally two years ago, Van Barneveld announced his retirement from the sport. But he made his return and earned his place on the professional circuit back in February this year, and arrived at the World Darts Championship dreaming of a deep run.

He cruised past Lourence Ilagan 3-0 in the first-round, but Cross proved a challenge too far.

The tournament now takes a break for a few days before returning on Monday December 27. Gerwyn Price and Michael van Gerwen are the favourites to lift the trophy, with the final taking place on Monday January 3.
