The World Economic Forum officially begins today with Indian leader Narendra Modi delivering the keynote speech.

Modi was set to be the highlight of the event in the Swiss village of Davos until Donald Trump decided to also attend.

The US President is due to speak on Friday, although the US government shutdown has cast doubt upon his planned visit.

Modi follows on from Chinese President Xi Jinping's address to the global elite at last year's event, in which he portrayed his country as a champion of free trade.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also due to address the crowd.

Davos has been hit by unusually heavy snowfall which has seen plans by left-wing groups to hold protests scuppered.

Organisers rejected a request to hold a demonstration, claiming snowfall in recent days means there is not enough space.

Last night, Elton John blasted the “disgraceful” inequality in the world as he picked up an award for raising awareness of human rights.

The singer was joined by Cate Blanchett and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan in receiving Crystal Awards at a ceremony to mark the opening of the conference.
